The role of an altar server is a significant and honourable ministry within the Catholic Church, providing vital assistance to the priest during the celebration of Mass. Altar servers play an important part in enhancing the beauty and solemnity of the liturgy, helping the congregation to participate more fully in the sacred mysteries being celebrated.
Primary Responsibilities of Altar Servers
The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest and deacon at the altar, ensuring that the Mass is conducted smoothly and reverently. This role involves several important duties, each contributing to the proper flow of the liturgical celebration:
Carrying the Processional Cross and Candles: At the beginning and end of Mass, altar servers lead the procession by carrying the processional cross and candles. This procession marks the start and conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, symbolizing the light of Christ entering and departing the worship space. The servers' role in this procession highlights the importance of reverence and the solemnity of the Mass.
Holding the Roman Missal for the Celebrant: During Mass, the celebrant (priest) frequently uses the Roman Missal, the book containing the prayers, blessings, and readings. When the priest is not at the altar, such as during the opening and closing prayers or the Liturgy of the Word, altar servers assist by holding the book. This allows the priest to remain focused on leading the congregation in prayer and ensures a smooth flow of the liturgical rites.
Assisting with the Preparation of the Gifts: During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, altar servers help in preparing the altar for the presentation of the bread and wine, which will be consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ. This preparation includes arranging the chalice, paten, and other sacred vessels, as well as bringing the water and wine to the altar. By assisting with these tasks, altar servers play a key role in the central act of worship in the Catholic faith.
Additional Duties: Altar servers may also assist with a variety of other tasks during Mass, such as ringing the bells at appropriate times, washing the priest’s hands, and helping with incense when it is used. These responsibilities require attentiveness and a willingness to learn the details of the liturgy.
Invitation to Serve
We warmly encourage anyone in Grade 4 or older who has received their First Confession and Holy Communion to consider becoming an altar server. This ministry offers a unique opportunity for young members of the parish to deepen their involvement in the Church's liturgical life and to serve God and the community in a meaningful way.
Why Become an Altar Server?
Becoming an altar server is more than just fulfilling a set of duties; it is a way to grow closer to God and to develop a deeper understanding of the Mass and its significance. Altar servers have the privilege of being close to the altar and directly participating in the liturgical action. Through their service, they learn more about the Eucharist, develop a deeper love for the Church, and grow in their spiritual life.
Additionally, serving at the altar fosters a sense of responsibility, discipline, and reverence in young people. It helps them to develop leadership skills and encourages them to be active participants in their faith community. Altar servers also have the opportunity to form friendships with other young people who share their faith and commitment to serving God.
