The Sacrament of Confirmation: Strengthening Our Faith Journey
Confirmation, along with Baptism and the Eucharist, is one of the three sacraments of Christian initiation. Together, these sacraments lay the foundation of every Christian life, welcoming us fully into the Church and initiating us into the mysteries of our faith. While Baptism cleanses us of original sin and makes us members of the Church, and the Eucharist nourishes us with the Body and Blood of Christ, Confirmation completes our initiation by strengthening and sealing the grace we received at Baptism.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is essential for the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the baptized. Through Confirmation, the faithful are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit, which deepens their relationship with God, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit within them, and empowers them to live as true witnesses of Christ in the world. This sacrament imprints a spiritual mark, or indelible character, on the soul, signifying that the person is now a mature member of the Church, fully equipped to share in its mission.
It is important for the faithful to understand that the reception of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. It is through Confirmation that we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit, who brings us the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts help us to live our faith more fully and to act according to God’s will.
At our parish, candidates for Confirmation are typically students in Grade Seven (7) or higher. This sacrament marks a significant step in their spiritual journey, preparing them to live out their faith with greater commitment and to serve as witnesses to Christ in all aspects of their lives.
Confirmation Preparation Schedule
Preparation for Confirmation at our parish usually takes place in the fall, depending on the bishop’s schedule and the number of children registered. The preparation is spread over six weeks, with sessions held on weekday evenings. These sessions provide an opportunity for candidates to deepen their understanding of the faith, learn about the role of the Holy Spirit, and explore what it means to live as a confirmed Catholic.
We invite all eligible candidates and their families to fully participate in this transformative experience, growing deeper in their faith as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
